About This Quote

In the story "The Singer of Tales" from The Arabian Nights, a man is tortured by a crowd. The man pleads with them to stop, but they do not believe him. The torturer explains that he will not be able to give him a sound beating if he doesn’t sing. He nails his feet to the ground and demands that the man sing.

He tells him that he must sing all the songs of the world – every one. Eventually, after countless hours of singing, the man can no longer continue to hold back his agony. He sings out in pain, and his tormentor is moved to pity.
